The poetics of a dialogue
Assumption Matthew 03/15/2025 to 05/11/2025

My gaze has always been linked to my surroundings, to nature and the landscape. In the process of internalizing this reality, I have created an inner landscape that, through metaphor, allows me to transcend superficial appearance to express much more. Perception.

For me, painting and any form of artistic expression are tools of knowledge.

That is why I believe that the creative process is always more important than the final result. My works are, in essence, traces of time that reflect the testimony of who I am.

Life and thought are intrinsically related to the creative act. Perception is the contact that relates us to the world. The gaze is the instant of union with the world.

Thus, everything I am, what I seek and what concerns me is manifested in my works, whether through painting, sculpture or poetry.

In recent years, my gaze, which has almost always been focused on nature, the landscape, forests and trees, has expanded towards the cosmos. This evolution reflects the awareness that we are part of a whole, where everything is connected.

I use metaphor to better express my emotions, concerns and demands. This exhibition is the result of a research process that connects the gaze towards the natural environment with a more universal perspective. Through an inner thread, the various forms of expression – painting, sculpture, drawing or visual poetry – converge according to what the theme requires.

My works are a reflection of my essence, my doubts, my discoveries and, ultimately, life itself.

In this exhibition at Espai Art 60 in Sant Joan de les Abadesses, you will be able to find works related to these themes, in small, more intimate and medium formats, worked with different tools, such as painting on canvas and paper, sculptures in iron, bronze and wood and engravings.”

Assumption Matthew

The poetics of a dialogue

WORKS

Feeling nature

“We are stardust thinking about stars. We are the way the universe thinks about itself” Carl Sagan.

I started this series of works during the confinement period. They emerged from some drawings and notes that I found in my study notebooks. Nature, solitude, isolation, impacted me in such a way that they made me feel how imperceptible, tiny we are in front of the immensity of the universe.

This awareness of the microcosm and macrocosm to which we belong. Like an awakening to universal consciousness.

“The study of the universe is a journey of self-discovery”

Bach on my mind

In Bach on My Mind, Assumpció Mateu establishes a dialogue between musical and pictorial language, taking Johann’s scores Sebastian Bach as a point of accompaniment while painting the inner strength of trees.

The artist decomposes and reinterprets his staves, transforming them into visual compositions full of dynamism and depth. Through collage, he constructs a universe where the mathematical precision of baroque music dissolves into vibrant and sober shapes, transparencies and textures.

His painting captures the structured and yet expressive essence of Bach, converting sound into image and offering a visual experience that resonates with the composer’s timelessness.

Debussy on my mind

The Debussy on My Mind series by Assumpció Mateu is an immersion in the fusion of music and painting, where the scores of Claude Debussy (1862-1918) become visual landscapes full of subtlety and suggestion.

Considered the father of musical impressionism, Debussy revolutionized harmony and sound color in a period of great artistic effervescence between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Through collage, Mateu constructs a dialogue between musical fluidity and pictorial freedom, between evocation and spontaneity. His work becomes a visual reflection of Debussy’s light and sound poetics, transporting us to a universe of fleeting sensations and vibrant atmospheres.

Window to the universe

This work is in the form of an open book with a window that, as Ibn Arabi said, “The universe is an immense book, because the book is revelation, it offers you knowledge, emotions, and thoughts that make you evolve.” Through this window you see the universe. The Everything.

It is a sculpture that invites you to knowledge and beauty. Through very simple forms with a strong symbolic charge.
